INVESTING IN THE FUTURE
On Saturday, May 16, 2015, Cordova Telephone Cooperative and its subsidary Cordova Wireless Communications announced $20,000 worth of scholarships to a long list of deserving students.
Through its partnership with the Alaska Telephone Association (ATA), Cordova Telephone awarded CHS graduates Sarah Hoepfner and Lindsey Hammer with $2,000 and $3,000, respectively.
Cordova Telephone Cooperative and Cordova Wireless are also pleased to announce that Cordova High School senior, Lindsey Hammer, is the recipient of an additional $5,000 college scholarship from Cordova Telephone Cooperative (CTC) and the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS), the philanthropic arm of NTCA-The Rural Broadband Association. This is especially impressive, considering the amount awarded to Ms. Hammer and the competition she faced to receive this award. Out of over 1,400 applications received from rural youth across the United States this year, only fifty three scholarships were awarded in amounts that ranged from $1500-$5000.
“We are thrilled to offer this program, with the goal of leveling the playing field for rural students,” said Paul Kelly, GM/CEO of Cordova Telephone and Cordova Wireless. “The FRS scholarship program enables rural telecommunications providers to show their support of the youth living in the communities they serve. It is a source of tremendous pride for us and for the entire community of Cordova.”
Ms. Hoepfner and Ms. Hammer weren’t the only students to be rewarded for their hard work and dedication. Cordova Telephone and Cordova Wireless also awarded over $10,000 in their own scholarships to Cordova students this week. 2015 CTC scholarship recipients were Sarah Hamberger, Gabrielle Brown, Meryll Arcalas, Sarah Hoepfner, Robin Pegau, Casey Smyke, Lindsey Hammer, Dariah Songer, Chandelle Erby, and Ann Carlson. 2015 CWC scholarship recipients were Sarah Hamberger, Gabrielle Brown, Meryll Arcalas, and Sarah Hoepfner.
CTC strongly supports the youth of our community and is thrilled to sponsor this worthy program. FRS scholarship recipients were selected by an independent team of reviewers from the education field. To be eligible, recipients must be sponsored by a NTCA member system, and must indicate a desire to return to their rural communities once their collegiate studies have been completed. CTC and CWC’s scholarship committee is comprised of CTC members and board members with experience and interest in education and Cordova Youth. Applicants are required to be paying customers and seniors in high school, planning to attend an accredited university or vocational school. Salmon Jam
Salmon Jam Music Festival is a summer highlight for many Cordovans and visitors, and this year is poised to be their best yet. There’s always good food, a hopping dance floor, lots of neat arts and crafts booths, and a packed beer garden. But that’s not the only reason Salmon Jam is great. An anchor component of Cordova’s annual summer event, Copper River Wild Salmon Festival, Salmon Jam is also the annual fundraiser for Cordova Arts, a non-profit group of local volunteers that works year-round to bring arts and culture to our small but vibrant community.

Part 2 in our series of local Cordova aritsans: Brian, Lindsay and little Rowan from Harborside Pizza are interviewed here by local news source ASLN. These guys are a staple of Cordova and a great example of the quality of people and talent we have here. Such a great family and you cannot BEAT their pizza!
4th of July Festivities
It sure feels like summer around here lately. With almost more sunshine than rain these days, Cordovans might run the risk of forgetting they live in Cordova!

Woolen Travels
It always amazes me how many talented artists and craftsmen (and women) of all types we have in Cordova. This is my first post in a series focusing on some of the amazing artists and entrepreneurs of Cordova.
Shelly Kocan provides acupuncture and other treatments at Ilanka Clinic by day and is a yarn-dyeing fiber fanatic by night. You may recognize her from previous posts. Her company (Snow Capped Yarns) and her website (Woolen Travels) can give a much better introduction than I can. Enjoy! 🙂
Cordova in the Fall
It’s easy to start feeling blue in autumn, especially in a place like Cordova, where you can gain 10 inches of rain and lose 5 minutes of daylight in a day. But there is still so much beauty to see, bounty to harvest and sometimes even some sunshine! Happy Fall, everyone!
Nagoon berries ripe for the picking and plentiful. Patches like this are highly coveted and usually pretty hard to find, but this was a good berry year.

Up there with electricity, telephone and internet, it’s something many people don’t want to live without. Home Energy Workshop comes to Cordova!
The Native Village of Eyak and Alaska Craftsman Home Program are working together to bring a great opportunity to Cordova this month! If you’ve ever lived in this part of Alaska, you know how high your heating and energy bills can be, especially in winter!
